Region 2 Youth - Home

Region 2 youth: horse judgingRegion 2 has an active group of kids who participate in hippology teams, judging teams, field trips to local farms and horse shows, and they assist and volunteer with shows.  The kids grow within the club and eventually are able to run for office at the Regional and National level.

The hippology program is an extraordinary opportunity for youth interested in all things horse.  Hippology is the study of horses so it includes various subjects such as colors, breeds, training, tack, management, conformation, feed, etc.  Beginning in January, the kids study all things on the Internet and in books.  All are given weekly subjects to study and most attend the monthly trainings.  In May and June, the participants are given the opportunity to compete in two hippology exams and win great prizes.  Any youth member can study and partake in the monthly activities.  The hippology contests in 2017 are sponsored by the Region 2 club, AHA OF SAN FERNANDO VALLEY (AHASFV).

hippology ribbonsThe second program involving our youth group is the Youth Judging Team.  This team is composed mainly of the older youth that want to learn how to critique a horse and the different requirements expected in each discipline of riding.  The youths learn to judge horses for conformation and type (most resembling their breed) and performance classes.  After learning to judge and place a class, the participants present their reasons on why they chose to place it the way they did.  The oral presentations of reasons are the toughest and best part.  There are two judging competitions during the year; one is at Cal Poly Pomona’s Ag Field Day in the Spring and the second is held locally in August.  The top seven scoring youths from those two competitions receive an invitation to take a sponsored trip to the final Judging Contest at the U.S. Arabian Horse Nationals in Tulsa in October.  Not only do the kids represent themselves and their region, they judge high quality horses that are competing at the pinnacle of their breed.  The experience is unmatched in that the youths learn poise, public speaking, and a greater appreciation for Arabian horses.

The Region 2 Youth are expected to contribute to their success and activities by supporting their local Arabian horse clubs, the local shows, and all fundraising endeavors.  Region 2 is also to be commended for their commitment to developing a strong youth program and helping to ensure the longevity and popularity of the Arabian breed.
